A "Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator" or "Street Scene" may remind
our tenants to note the need to observe rules for rubbish collections.
Canterbury City Council can impose spot fines of up to £300 for improper disposal of rubbish. Every year at least one tenant is fined for improper rubbish disposal – do not let it be you!
The most frequent complaint is, "We cannot fit our rubbish into a fortnightly collection".
The collection system is environmentally designed to force households to macimise recycling.
Ignore this and you are unlikely to have enough room in the black bin alone.
"
Show me a bin with no room and I will show you improper rubbish disposal".
Bob Leydon 5 October 2008
If you do not recycle your rubbish properly in the alternate weekly collection then you will not be able to fit your rubbish into the black bin alone.
Use clear sacks for:
cardboard, newspaper, magazines
plastic drinks containers like milk and fizzy drinks bottles – but not the lids,
empty tins (also without the lids), etc.
The symbols on the clear sacks indicate what is permissible to go inside.
Never place food or glass inside recycled sacks.
Canterbury City Council do not (at the time of writing) recycle glass from the doorstep.
There are bottle banks at most supermarkets.
There are bottle banks on some estates e.g. Tenterden Drive St Stephens Canterbury.
Finally, do not allow your bin lid to be open due to overfilling.
The bin is unlikely to be emptied if the lid is left open.
This is not just bureaucracy; flies get into the smallest gaps, lay eggs, these become smelly maggots, which ultimately become a fly infestation, and flies then fly into your house through open windows presenting a health hazard.
