STUDENT HOUSEMATE MATCHING

mainly for merging tenants returning for a further year
ESTABLISHING COMPATIBLE STUDENT HOUSEMATES

LEYDON LETTINGS NORMALLY ONLY LET TO GROUPS OF STUDENTS.
WE MAY ASSIST INDIVIDUALS TO JOIN EXISTING STUDENT GROUPS
GROUPS MAY BE CURRENT TENANTS OR POTENTIAL TENANTS

Occasionally we are asked by current tenants to assist with finding housemates.

With a student's permission we introduce you to other house-hunting students in Canterbury.
If agreeable we forward your contact details to house hunters
and theirs to current tenants

If there has been no previous contact we suggest first meeting in a public place.
The Student Union or student bars and restaurants are ideal safe Canterbury meeting venues

SOME INITIAL CRITERIA TO CONDIER BEFORE SELECTING HOUSES OR HOUSEMATES

STATUS

Student
Professional (COUNCIL TAX CONSIDERATIONS)

STUDENT LOCATION

Christ Church University CCU
University of Kent at Canterbury UKC
University for the Creative Arts UCA

HOUSE LOCATION NEAR:

UKC
CCU
UCA

AVAILABLILTY / AFFORDABILITY

Budget
Ensuite (no point in viewing if unaffordable)

GENDER RACE etc

Race / religion
Male /female ratio?
(no point in viewing house if unaffordable or in wrong location OR  if you all want an ensuite but there are too few)
Check your housemate numbers - Scenarios may include:

Three separate groups of two each interested in a particular 6 bed house (3 x 2 =6 is simple)

If there are only 5 bedrooms selections or alternative options may be necessary.

Once the numbers are compatible decide whether the people are also compatible.

It is inadvisable to delay arranging viewings and meetings.
Delays may result in your potential housemate(s) finding another house or housemate.

If two or more groups merge one student from each group acts as coordinator for each group.

Later when you are confident you have potentially suitable housemates you can view the house.

COMPATIBILITY CRITERIA TO CONSIDER BEFORE SELECTING HOUSEMATES

How do you discover compatibility?

Establish if important whether male or female housemates are sought?

The only girl in a large group might feel uncomfortable.

TO GET YOU TALKING
:

Topics for conversation and potential compatibility might include:

Course Title
University attended
Where you are from
Hobbies and interests

Music
Food
Eat out / in
Extremes: Obsessive compulsive v too laid back

Clean freak of disgustingly dirty.
Wash up before bedtime or leave for others to clean!

Avoid Politics & Religion unless this is a housemate criteria?

Sport

Fashion & Shopping

Loud or quiet attitude, music

Film Theatre TV

Travel

Age of housemates

Party animal or only time for intensive course e.g. PGCE student
Undergraduate / postgraduate / PGCE
If all else fails discuss the weather!

More important than all these topics is one word - tolerance.

Once any initial novelty wears off tolerance is probably all that is left.

Like it or not we are all a bit odd.  This is what makes life interesting.
But would you chose to live with odd people?
The answer might be; would they chose to live with you?

Leydon Lettings do not normally let to individuals before February in any year.

We may be willing to do this where current tenants are "orphaned" by departing housemates.

We will only do this when EXISTING housemates agree to find any REMAINING housemates.

This must be done in good time by the end November and certainly before the Christmas vacation.
The student viewing season is over by mid January in any year.

Leydon Lettings do not leave it until January to reserve houses as this is too late risking voids.

Leydon Lettings 2006
Leydon Lettings is a Member of NLA; NFRL; RLA and all houses are accredited or licensed.
