Landlords must be careful! Fraudsters stating they want to rent a property may pay in advance.
They send a cheque for the total rent or even for more than the total rent.
The "mistaken overpayment" is then returned, or it is suggested they can no longer take the property for spurious reasons.
The cheque sent to cover the cost of the rent is likely to be stolen or a forgery but may be CLEARED BY OUR BANK INITIALLY.
Some time later when it is discovered that the cheque is fake, payment is stopped and the bank simply claw back the money directly from the landlords account. The naive landlord will lose any monies sent to the fraudster.
Unfortunately the dishonest behavior of a few can adversely affect the majority of honest students.
The moral here is to get payments right at the outset! Set up a standing order with clear dates and amounts.
Students andany parents paying or contributing should be clear as to who is paying what to avoid genuine double payments.
If you do make a mistake, the risk of loss is reasonably likely to cause delays until repayment is risk free..
