Next of Kin (NOK)

  • It is prudent and compassionate to establish a tenant's nearest and dearest in the event of illness or death.
  • It is also best practice to procure this information in the event the tenant needs contacting post tenancy, e.g. to return possessions left behind.
  • Imagine a tenant was found in a coma unable to communicate and with limited life-expectancy.  How would you as landlord respond?  Parent's would expect to be informed.
  • This is why it is important to pre-empt such matters and ask tenants to complete questionnaires when there is not yet such a threat or sensitivity in asking such questions.
