Letting a large HMO? Here are a few helpful points to consider:

  • As of 1st October 2018, HMOs comprising of five or more tenants must be licensed under the government's extension of mandatory licensing regardless of the number of storeys. 
  • Canterbury introduced Article 4 Direction which will curtail the number of student houses in Canterbury. If you are planning to change the status (use) of your property to an HMO, you must seek permission from Canterbury City Council. You will require a license if your HMO has five or more tenants.
