Sui Generis (Of Its Own Kind)

  • This term is used particularly in planning to describe a category which is basically uncategorised or which is in a category of its own.
  • E.g. A property of "more than 6 unrelated residents" is so classed.
  • Planning permission is automatically required for such a property as a property of "more than 6 residents" unless exempt by pre-existing occupation prior to legislation (i.e. by licence with a small "l").
