Red Nose Day 2019 – Comic Relief

Red Nose Day (RND) is a telethon which helps raise funds for numerous charities that help children in need and tackle worldwide poverty.

Origin

Beginning in 1988, Red Nose Day was first celebrated with comedian Lenny Henry in Ethiopia on 8th February. Over 150 celebrities and comedians participated, including co-founder and comedy scriptwriter Richard Curtis.

The event raised 15 million pounds and attracted 30 million television viewings on BBC1.

Today, Lenny Henry and Richard Curtis are still active participants of the Red Nose Day Telethon and since it’s launch it has raised over 1 billion pounds.

Awareness

Every two years, RND hits television screens and provides an evening of entertainment and comedy. The show unites the UK and encourages people to raise money at home, school, and work. An example of this could be dressing up in something silly, organising a bake sale or hiking a great distance.

RND states that its aim is to “bring about positive and lasting change in the lives of poor and disadvantaged people, which we believe requires investing in work that addresses people’s immediate needs as well as tackling the root causes of poverty and injustice”.

The money raised through RND provides support for people living in poverty in the UK, as well as internationally.
